Reviews

Unfortunately this left my hair

"Unfortunately this left my hair dry and stiff. I have colored curly hair and generaly use a mousse but sometimes use kinky curly curling custard gel which seems to add more slip and detangling than this product."

— Dale S. (2/5)

Love

"I love this lightweight gel. Easy application! Great hold."

— Sondra S. (5/5)

Amazing gel

"This is my secret to bouncy curls that last the entire week. I only wash my hair on Sundays and I do not have to reapply throughout the week. I add a little bit of water if I have a couple of flyaways and that's it my hair does not flake or anything. I get lots of compliments and people always ask what kind of gel I use."

— Emmy (5/5)

great

"perfect hold. or too much not to little, allows the ringlets to be very defined and singular"

— Jaci C. (5/5)

My mom loves it

"I bought this for my mom as I am trying to teach her how to take care of her curls. She loves it and I will purchase it again for her. She likes it because it still have a hold, but it doesn't leave her hair stiff."

— MB (5/5)

Great product, not a lot

"Great product, not a lot of product required to hold your curls defined and last all day into next."

— Nicola M. (5/5)

First Time User and I'll Buy It Again

"(Type 2b hair, thick, dry and medium-coarse) I do not understand how so little of this goes so far. A tiny amount of not very jelly like liquid at all (it's arguably quite watery) gives me a full cast when combined with the Air Dry Cream. I'm used to using ~1 tbsp of gel, so it's great to be able to use so sparingly. Smells great too, I really like this stuff - low on frizz, doesn't leave my hair too glossy/saturated."

— Joe R. (4/5)

Great gel! Medium hold & no stiffness!

"Loving this gel! It holds, defines, and doesn’t require a cast breaking post drying. Just grabbed a travel size for future traveling! Love!"

— Jms (5/5)

Must have gel

"This is a must have part of my routine. I can't imagine styling my hair without it. It gives long lasting control from a light cast. You dont have any sticky residue on your hair it always feels soft but styled."

— Deb E. (5/5)

Good product but does not suit my hair

"I'm 2c/3a medium length curl. Dense head of hair. Dry, prone to frizz. I was looking for a lighter styler than the gel so went for this. The product is easy to apply, doesn't leave a tacky residue. Nice finish but doesn't offer the hold i need for my hair type to prevent frizz etc. Id be lucky to get through the day before its lost all shape."

Q&A

How is this different from the Frizz Rescue Curl Retainer? Which is better for fine hair?
Hi Jeanne, Thanks for your questions. Hydro Style Flexi Jelly is a lightweight, medium-hold gel that adds definition and volume without weighing hair down — perfect for fine hair. The Frizz Rescue Curl Retainer is richer and provides stronger frizz control, ideal for thicker or drier curls. For fine hair, we recommend the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly. Let us know if you have additional questions. Thanks, Curlsmith
Could you confirm if this is protein free please? My hair dislikes protein. Many thanks.
Hi Anne! This product contains no protein :)
Can the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly be used on the days I blow out and flat iron my hair?
Hi Amy, Thanks for reaching out! The Hydro Style Flexi Jelly is designed as a styling gel for enhancing and holding curls, so it’s not ideal for use on blow-out or flat-ironed styles. For heat styling days, we recommend using a lightweight heat protectant instead to help guard your hair from damage. If you have additional questions. Please reach out to hello@curlsmith.com. Thanks, Curlsmith
Should the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly be used before or after a heater protectant like the Miracle Shield? I ask because the “How to Use” instructions for the Miracle Shield state that it should be used prior to stylers, but since the Miracle Shield contains oils, I would think it should be used after the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly.
Hi Sadie, Thanks for reaching out to us. You should apply the Miracle Shield first, followed by the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly. The Miracle Shield is a heat protectant and should be applied to damp hair before any stylers to ensure even coverage and protection. While it contains oils, they are lightweight and designed to work under styling products without affecting their performance. If you have further questions. Please reach out to us at hello@curlsmith.com and our team will be able to help you. Thanks, Curlsmith
How much should be used?
Hi Jeannine, Thanks for reaching out to us. When using Hydro Style Flexi Jelly, a little typically goes a long way. Start with a small amount, about a nickel-sized amount, and apply it evenly through your damp hair. You can always add more if needed, but using too much can weigh down your hair or cause excessive buildup. If you have further questions. Please reach out to us at hello@curlsmith.com and our team will be able to help you. Thanks, Curlsmith
(This may be a silly question so apologizes in advance.) Can a leave-in conditioner that intensely fights humidity be added prior to the Hydro Jelly without the two products counteracting? Asking because of the Hydro Jelly ingredients. Thanks in advance.
Hi M, Thank you for your question! You can certainly use a leave-in conditioner that fights humidity prior to applying the Hydro Jelly. Generally, leave-in conditioners are designed to be compatible with various styling products. However, for the best results and to ensure there is no counteracting effect, I recommend applying a small amount of both products on a test section of your hair first. This will help you see how they work together with your hair type and texture. If you have further questions. Please reach out to us at hello@curlsmith.com and our team will be able to help you. Best, Curlsmith
Can you use this on damp hair that has been sprayed with a spray bottle generously to style on a day you do not have time rinse it?
Hi there, Thank you for reaching out with your question regarding the use of Hydro Style Flexi Jelly on damp hair without rinsing. Yes, you can definitely use the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly on damp hair that has been generously sprayed with water from a spray bottle. In fact, applying it to damp hair can enhance its styling capabilities, helping to define curls or waves while providing a flexible hold. This method is particularly convenient for those days when time is limited, as it allows you to quickly style your hair without the need for a full rinse. Simply apply the Hydro Style Flexi Jelly to your damp hair, style as desired, and you're good to go! If you have additional questions. Please reach out to us at hello@curlsmith.com and our team will be able to help you. Thanks, Curlsmith
Can I use this alone to style my wavy hair, no other products?
Hi Salma, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We would love to assist you in finding the best product for your hair type. Please reach out to us at hello@curlsmith.com and our team will be able to help you. Thanks, Curlsmith
